The Difference 10 Years of Hope Makes
More than a decade ago, leaders in Guilford County, North Carolina learned about Camp HOPE America through Alliance for HOPE International and made a powerful decision to bring the model to their community.
With a shared belief that children impacted by trauma deserve more than survival, a small group of leaders, including Alliance for HOPE International’s current President and CEO, Catherine Johnson, came together to take action. They believed children deserve real hope.
Not hope built on words alone, but hope grounded in mentorship, goal-setting, and consistent support.
With just 27 children, Camp HOPE America was launched, beginning a journey that would transform hundreds of lives.
This past summer, eight of those original campers returned for a high-adventure experience, still connected after ten years. On the final night, they gathered under a clear, star-filled sky with camp leaders. Instead of reflecting on the past, they spoke about the future, their goals, their plans, and the paths they were determined to pursue.
Then, a shooting star crossed the sky.
For many, it was the first they had ever seen, a quiet and powerful moment marking how far they had come.
Because of Camp HOPE America, these young people were not defined by the trauma they experienced. With consistent support, trusted relationships, and long-term investment in their healing, they grew into confident young adults ready to step into futures filled with possibility. Children who once lived with fear and uncertainty are now dreaming and building what comes next.
Today, our model of hope continues to expand internationally with Camp HOPE America, Affiliated Family Justice Centers, and Alliance for HOPE’s broad network of supportive programs. While our mission remains the same, creating communities of safety, hope, and healing, our impact continues to grow.
With 96 Affiliated Family Justice Centers and 47 Camp HOPE America locations, we’re walking with families through crisis into hope.
