Recommendations for the Medical/Radiographic Evaluation of the Pregnant Adult Patient with Non-Fatal Strangulation

In 2016, the Training Institute on Strangulation Prevention Medical Advisory Board released Recommendations for the Medical/Radiographic Evaluation of the Adult Patient with Non-Fatal Strangulation based on the latest medical literature. Today, we are honored to share our recommendations for the Pregnant Adult Patient. Pregnant victims of strangulation are at high risk for future violence and serious health consequences to themselves and their unborn child. The goals of the recommendations include calling for the evaluation of the carotid and vertebral arteries for injuries, the bony/cartilaginous and soft tissue neck structure, and the brain for anoxic injuries, and evaluate/monitor the fetus. “Our recommendations are already providing a higher level of assessment, identifying life-threatening injuries and saving lives. We salute the hospitals and academic emergency medicine programs around the world that have adopted the recommendations.” said Dr. Smock, Chair of the Medical Advisory Board.
